‘A visual and aural extravaganza, Whatever! is a surreal mix of Grease, Clueless and The Jerry Springer Show. The music is rousing and, combined with the choreography and over-the-top performances, creates a dazzling 75 minutes of fun-packed action’ ***** The List
‘Musicals at the Fringe are rare, this one is exceptional…the action and dance routines are worthy of Broadway’ ***** Edinburgh Guide
‘Hurray! A clever, catchy production that has everyone tapping their feet in the aisles…come out with a grin that would put Travolta to shame’ ***** Three Weeks
In 1998, Dafydd was a student at Edinburgh University studying English literature. Having met Rob Evans (Writer and co-lyricist of Peter Pan) and Ben Lewis (co-writer of ‘Sue’ and The Village Social) on a production based on Maurice Sendak’s Max and The Wild Things, they created a new musical – Whatever! – as a small lunchtime production.
Dafydd wrote the music and lyrics.
The show follows Sindy and Wood, through the 80s, 90s and beyond and combines the High School tropes of Grease with a biting satire. Unashamedly camp, exuberantly queer, yet defiantly populist it’s both a love-song to, and satire of, the globalization of American popular culture.
In the year 2000, together with producer Kat Reynolds, they took Whatever! to the Edinburgh Fringe. It became a sell-out success and was greeted with critical acclaim.
In 2007, they presented a version of Whatever! at The Venue, Leicester Square (temporarily called Apocalypse Wow). The workshop featured Julie Atherton (Avenue Q), Oliver Tompsett (Wicked), Ashleigh Grey (Wicked) and Steven Webb (History Boys) and Tom Edden (One Man, Two Guvnors).
Dafydd, Ben and Rob have plans to redevelop the show in 2016.
